2006 Fall VHF Contest                                Adventure to Dege Peak

On Saturday 9, 2006, adventure radio-ers, Worth W7WG, Chuck AC7QN, Mike W7MSX, Gary WG7X, and Rich KR7W drove to the Sunrise area of Mt Rainier National Park, and hiked the 2.5 miles uphill to Dege Peak.  Dege Peak is east of the Sunrise visitor center, on the Sour Dough Ridge, at 7003 ft elevation.

The radio adventurers took with them:  Two Yaesu FT-817s, batteries, 70CM / 2 M yagi antenna, 6 M antenna, HF antennas, and personal comfort items.  The group operated from approx 11:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The hike from the car took about 90 minutes, with an elevation gain of approx 700 ft,  to the top of the peak.  Two stations were set up:  6 meter plus HF and 70CM plus 2 meter.

Approx 100 VHF QRP QSOs were made to all points N, NW, W, E, S and SE.  Notable contacts were:  Quincy, WA; Bend, OR both on SSB; and Bellingham, WA on 2M FM using a tape measure Yagi antenna and 5 watts.

A slide show for a radio club meeting will be created if enough people express interest.

Here's Worth W7WG, an avid Mountaineer member,  making contact with K7ILC in Bellingham, W7IK in Corvallis, and K7PUC in Olympia on 3.950 MHz.  Rig is Yaesu FT-817 at 5 watts.  Worth also contacted the Noon Time Net on 7.262500 MHz and received a good signal report.  The antennas are a 75 meter dipole and a 40 meter doublet suspended from a 30 ft fiberglass push up pole.
Worth's chair is actually on the edge of a big drop off.... but the chair's footing is very good.

Here's Gary WG7X operating the 6 meter station.  Gary raked in the SSB contacts on this band.
The antenna above his head is a "tape measure" yagi which was constructed in the radio club's  RDF Build IT class last May.  The 2 element six meter Yagi is above Gary's head... about 10 ft up.

This photo shows Mike W7MSX operating the 2 Meter / 70 CM station.  The radio is a Yaesu FT-817... and antenna is a home crafted (by Chuck AC7QN) dual band 70 CM / 2M multi element Yagi.  The 70 CM antenna elements are welding rod... and the 2 M elements are made from old TV set rabbit ears adjusted to "just the right" length.

This photo shows the 6 meter / HF station array.  From bottom to top:  2 meter Tape Measure Yagi, two element 6 meter homebrew Yagi, 40 meter doublet (most visible from top of push-up pole), and 75 meter dipole (mostly invisible).

Here's Gary WG7X at the 6M / HF station.  The small amount of wind blowing against the HF wire antennas easily bends the fiberlass pole to the point of looking like it is going to break.  The pole bending and the askew angle of the 6 meter antenna did not seem to affect the operation of the station.
